Add structure to discoveries with custom fields

How to create fields to organize and prioritize your Discoveries

Written by Marina Salmon

Discoveries come with a set of default fields. You can add your own on top, to organize and prioritize your backlog the way your team actually works.

You need an Editor account to create and edit Discovery fields.

How to create a Discovery field

  1. From the Product section, click Manage fields in the top right corner.

  2. A modal shows all your existing Discovery fields.

  3. Default Harvestr fields are marked with a lock icon and can't be edited.

  4. Click Add field to create a new one.

Single or multi-select

Discovery type: problem, improvement, bug

Rollup fields are the ones that fill themselves in. Every other type is something you or your team enters. A Rollup computes its value from what's already attached to the Discovery — the ARR of linked customers, the count of feedback carrying a given label — and updates as new feedback arrives.

Fields or tags?

Both add structure to a Discovery, and it's not always obvious which to reach for.

Tags

Free-form labels anyone can add. Good for loose grouping and themes that emerge as you go — "quick win", "Q3 candidate", "tech debt".

Fields

Structured values with a defined type. Good for anything you want to sort, score, or compare across Discoveries — effort, impact, ARR, RICE.

A simple rule: if you'll want to rank Discoveries by it, make it a field. If you just want to find them again, a tag is enough.

Add tags directly under a Discovery's title.

Using your fields

Fields appear in the right panel of every Discovery.

A newly created field isn't shown in your table view by default. To display it:

  1. Click View > Fields.

  2. Add the field to the current view.

  3. Save the view.

You can also filter Discoveries on field values to show only what you need, and save that as a view.

Start with two or three fields. A prioritization framework nobody fills in is worse than none at all. Impact and Effort are enough to get value on day one — add a Score field once your team is actually using them.
